The Evolution Of Sewing

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Sewing is a precision-oriented task that many may misconstrue as one that requires little skill. However, a closer look into the task is, indeed, an eye opener for many.

All over the world, sewing is a universal practice that dates back to prehistoric times, beginning from the time our prehistoric ancestors made use of animal fur to warm their bodies from freezing cold temperatures at nighttime and the stifling heat of the sun during the daytime.

They mended animal skin by using crude and sharp materials to cut, shape and sew the animal fur to cover their skin from the elements.  As time passed and the world gradually progressed, so did sewing, which evolved to constant changes in processes, methods, designs and equipment.

From what started only as needle and thread, it slowly progressed to one of complex machinery and mass production that not only revolutionized the concept of sewing.

The Importance Of Patterns In Sewing

Monday, September 28th, 2009

In sewing, a pattern is very important because it gives you the initial outline of the dress or any item you are trying to create. Aside from providing you the outline, patterns also give you an idea how much fabric you need and the ideal kind of the fabric for the project.

Seasoned experts agree that in order to get the right patterns for sewing, the sewer must first decide what kind of item he or she wishes to make and then the list of measurements needed. Compared to tablemats or curtains, patterns are more valuable when it comes to clothing because of the “wear ability” of the clothes will depend on the patterns chosen.

Choosing The Patterns For Clothing Needs

The Sewing Machine Foot Presser

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Sewing was once a skill done by hand. When the sewing machine was invented, it made the job much easier. The difference with this machine compared to others is that the user has to use both the hands and the feet.

The most important part of this machine is the foot presser. This is because it helps guide the material under the needle and over the face plate. In fact, this has been built in to most models on the market and if you aren’t happy stepping on it, perhaps it is time to have it replaced.

You should replace the sewing machine foot presser if it can only be used for straight or just regular zigzag stitching. Ideally, it should be able to do both and you can check on this by reading the manual. If you are content having to replace one foot with another, keep the first foot nearby so you can replace it easily.
